‘Hola Weg!’ I said to Mathias, getting into the car.


‘Hola veg?’ He replied. We laughed. We have a stupid joke about v’s and w’s.


‘But actually - hola veg, hullet veg? It does mean hole-road, a tunnel-road.’


Again the meaning of a strange Old English term was nestled inside Norwegian. Veg - road - weg - way. Hola weg, Holloway. ‘Det er rart, det. Jo mer jeg snakker norsk, jo bedre forstår jeg engelsk’.*


On the drive home I daydreamed about walking through the holloways 645 years ago to the sound of blackbirds and crows. I wondered if the same routes I had thundered up and down on my bike as a teenager were trodden by people back then, on their way to Blackheath, answering the call of Wat Tyler and John Ball and Johanna Ferrour. I wondered if the ridges and furrows still faintly visible in the landscape of my childhood were tended by the same people who carried their longbows and axes and sticks to London that June.


I dreamed that night about sleeping on Blackheath. Not the Blackheath of recent summers, walking with Tom and Zoë to Greenwich Park, but the Blackheath of 1381. I imagined arriving, nervous and with aching feet, surrounded by hundreds or thousands of strangers, and sitting down in long grass to eat and talk about the new freedoms. The end of subjugation, the end of serfdom, the end of feudalism and the poll tax and the humiliating inspections. No more money and men for endless wars. The tax records have been burned, the inspectors have turned on their heels. We have wrenched open the prison doors. The people of Essex have burned down the manor and torn up the millstones from the Lord’s dining hall floor. The wheat is their own and they’ll grind with their own stones, for this one glorious summer.


It’s the 13th of June and Johanna Ferrour is standing in the waning evening light. She is riling the crowd up for tomorrow. I listen to her, turning over two pine cones in my pocket, collected while beating the bounds with my mother last autumn. We’ll march into the city, where we’ll find comrades in the Londoners. They’ll open the gates to us and join us on our way to the Tower of London. We’ll drag Sudbury and Hales out and Johanna will strike the first blow with her axe. 645 years later the scar from his beheading will still be visible on Sudbury’s sorry skull. That night I will sleep restlessly on damp ground. Maybe my Dad and brothers are there too. Dad and the other farm workers are going to take the cottages and the fields and what they grow in them, and re-do Robert Owens’ Harmony Hall in Tytherley and this time it will work. The boys are going to claim the field where they ride their bikes as a common. I’m going to swim in the trout stream with my friends and sleep outside in the woods. We’ll paint a different Wilton Diptych, in lime and casein straight onto the walls of the Hall: Wat and John and Johanna and Katherine. We’ll write their names everywhere in silver.


There are men with longbows in the crowd on Blackheath. Back from fighting for the boy king Richard, they have a new flag on a long pole. White with a red cross. They say it’s the flag of St. George, and it’s a flag for England. We’re hazy on the details but we think it’s a flag for all of us, the ones carrying longbows and swords and the ones carrying scythes and sticks.


In the next few days Richard will give us his royal banner to carry alongside it. He will trick us, issue charters and agree to all of our demands, while plotting to stab Wat and slaughter the rebels at Smithfield. He will be called a clever and bold King by future historians, and they will paint him with angels, even though he deceived and betrayed us.


My brother told me to get off the bus at Wat Tyler Road (Stop K) and walk towards Blackheath.


In 1981 a mural was painted at Bow Common Lane to commemorate 600 years since the Peasants’ Revolt. It was painted by Ray Walker in just six weeks. In searching for public traces of the Peasants’ Revolt in London, I found that this short-lived mural was the only large scale celebration of the commoners of 1381. A carved stone plaque exists at the site of Wat Tyler’s murder by the King’s men, at St. Barts Hospital, Smithfield. It was made by Emily Hoffnung and erected in 2015. A road in Lewisham is named Wat Tyler Road. The mural, however, is gone.


*English: It’s funny, that. The more I speak Norwegian, the better I understand English.

Part I: lime.
Lime is a strange material: liquid rock, limestone in limbo. Limestone and its sister rocks chalk and marble are calcium carbonate, the&#38;nbsp; deposits of trillions of marine creatures over millennia, risen up from the sea into earth. It’s fitting for me, especially, that this rock is&#38;nbsp; made from the sea: I can sit here in my floating home and think of minuscule creatures swimming beneath me, drifting slowly to&#38;nbsp; their still beds, to become the foodstuff of rocks. I grew up on a raft of chalk which stretches across the Southern part of England&#38;nbsp; and over France. This chalk, the softest form of limestone, was a part of life there: around the faucets, in the garden soil, floating as&#38;nbsp; brittle flakes on top of a cup of tea. My family lived in a cottage called Chalky Down, on a farm named after a chalk pit. The more I&#38;nbsp; follow the calcium carbonate, break it down, the more it shows up everywhere, like a kind of magic. The chalk has found its way into&#38;nbsp; me, minerals absorbed by my body through water for 18 years, the landscape claiming me for itself. I wonder if, after so many years&#38;nbsp; away from home, I still carry any of that chalk with me in my bones. 
When you make a fresco you paint into liquid rock, and in minutes or hours it solidifies, painting turned to stone. 
So to make a fresco one must embed pigment particles into fresh lime plaster, which become locked into the mineral structure&#38;nbsp; when the plaster carbonises. This completes the cycle of lime: first a limestone rock, it has been heated (historically in a lime pit)&#38;nbsp; until it decomposed into calcium oxide, known as hot lime, quicklime, caustic lime, or burnt lime - and CO₂ (stage 1). Then this&#38;nbsp; calcium oxide, a white powder, was slaked. Water was added and a furious reaction occurred, producing liquid rock (stage 2). That&#38;nbsp; was mixed with sand, drawn from a river, to make plaster. The lime plaster carbonised in the air and turned back into limestone&#38;nbsp; (stage 3), but not before pigment was trapped inside. A painting turned to stone. 


 The lime cycle
Stage 1: CaCO₃ + heat =&#38;gt; CaO + CO₂ 
Stage 2: CaO + H₂O =&#38;gt; Ca(OH)₂ 
Stage 3: Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ =&#38;gt; CaCO₃ 


Part 2: sailor 
Soon I’m leaving, or at least I’ve been planning and dreaming of going away for a long time in my boat. Becoming a real sailor, finally. I&#38;nbsp; could tell you I’m called to the seas, but aren’t we all? 
Water covers two-thirds of the earth. It is hostile to human survival, but like all mammals, we enter this world through a miniature&#38;nbsp; ocean. In a vestige of our aquatic evolutionary history, human foetuses are gestated underwater, in salty amniotic fluid, an enclosed&#38;nbsp; sea we can inhabit just briefly, before we become truly mammalian at birth. Some people find their way back to the sea. Some return&#38;nbsp; to it for pragmatic reasons, some to work, and some for escape, because the ocean eschews class and categorisation: it is as much&#38;nbsp; an adventure playground for the rich and restless as it is a refuge for the desperate, the disenchanted and the indebted. Its cleansing&#38;nbsp; salts bless all, its currents wear away all kinds of stains. I can sympathise with the pirates, with the Old Man, even with Ahab. 
I am in love with sailors and sea stories, which by tradition are never wholly true. I am in love with the symbols of the sea, the white&#38;nbsp; whales and the forty fathoms and the ways seafaring is woven into language like a secret code. And with the constant presence of&#38;nbsp; life on boats: the way mooring lines can glow blue-green with bioluminescence when pulled from the water at night, or halyards&#38;nbsp; whistle like banshees and thrum against the mast while I try to sleep. In winter I wake up at dawn to the sound of fifty eider ducks&#38;nbsp; delving under the boat and pummelling the hull for barnacles to nibble on. It sounds like the water all around me is boiling. In the&#38;nbsp; summer the eider ducks (norsk: ærfugler) leave, and the mackerel begin to break the surface with loud, sudden jumps and splashes,&#38;nbsp; limbless and haphazard. Cormorants show up and dive for them. We slip loose the painter* and cruise around in the tender, eating ice&#38;nbsp; cream and watching . I can come home from work at the art academy by boat across Store Lungegårdsvannet to Puddefjorden; I almost don’t need to be on land at all. 
Last summer I sailed across the North Sea to Shetland, first time I’d been back to Scotland in seven years. I met an old friend for a&#38;nbsp; drink and we talked about mareel (Shetland Scots), morild (norsk), noctiluca scintillans. Then I sailed back to Bergen and for the first&#38;nbsp; time the algae showed up here, like it had overheard. Mareel surrounded the harbour in Solheimsviken, a thick orange soup by day&#38;nbsp; 
and an otherworldly radiance by night. The bioluminescence made me cry. It was so effortless and so spectacular, and watching it&#38;nbsp; was more satisfying than looking at anything I’ve ever made in the studio. I didn’t dive into it, but I wish I had done. I just stood there&#38;nbsp; with a stick, agitating it, making it light up, feeling better. 


Part 3: diver 

The obsession with the sea shared by so many - we come from it, we gestate in it, we live beside it, we go to it - goes back a long&#38;nbsp; way, and I find this comforting. The Tomb of the Diver is a rare early fresco work, from around 470BCE, made in a city called&#38;nbsp; Poseidonia. The enduring mystery of the painted tomb is its ceiling, where the fresco painting depicts a young man diving into waves&#38;nbsp; from a ladder-like structure. He is alone, suspended in mid-leap, wide eyed and decisive, in contrast to the reclining groups of friends&#38;nbsp; and lovers painted on the walls below. The painting is a mystery; nobody knows why there is a painting of a diver on the ceiling of a&#38;nbsp; tomb containing a young corpse, and few paintings survive from this time period. The Ancient Greeks related diving to death, to the&#38;nbsp; unknown, and especially to passion and heartbreak, so the diver has often been seen as a representation of the last spectacular leap&#38;nbsp; into the void. He embraces it, he faces it head on, and this one glorious moment is preserved forever in lime. 
When I started to look at images of the Tomb of the Diver and think about it, I didn’t know about the connection to Paul Thek. But&#38;nbsp; after Michael mentioned it to me, I looked it up and noticed a couple of things. One of Thek’s small late blue paintings has a&#38;nbsp; rendition of the diver that is so similar to the ancient one in the Tomb that I think there’s no question regarding its inspiration. And&#38;nbsp; his is also reddish, but the head is tucked anonymously between the arms rather than looking triumphantly toward the water. I&#38;nbsp; wonder if Thek was also thinking about death and the diver as a traveller between this life and whatever is beyond it, a traveller with&#38;nbsp; Charon over Acheron and Styx to the afterlife.&#38;nbsp; 
The ancient diver is ecstatic, confident, and fully committed to this transition. I wonder if this is what drew Thek to the image, as it&#38;nbsp; does for me? I love divers. I love birds that dive and people that dive. I like to watch them. One hot hot day this summer, close to&#38;nbsp; midnight a group of young boys climbed up on the bridge over the harbour and dove from it, silhouetted against the red western&#38;nbsp; horizon. One by one they soared down. I’m always cheering on Mathias leaping from diving boards or taking a sprint towards the&#38;nbsp; waters’ edge, because when he’s suspended for a second mid-air, long limbs pulling the air into place as he drops and rotates to go&#38;nbsp; fingertips first into the water, he’s a vision of fearlessness. When I dive, I stand close to the water’s edge. I spring cautiously forward,&#38;nbsp; mostly dropping like discarded catch and sliding quietly under. But Mathias makes it a spectacle, arms and legs bent like an ungainly&#38;nbsp; airborne frog before his body resolves into a harpoon. It’s ok to be a painter. Sometimes I wish I was a diver.
*In sailing terms, the tender is the small inflatable boat carried with a sailboat for reaching shallow waters. The line used to attach the tender to the sailboat is called a painter.

	In As Emperors Own Empires, English-born landscape painter Laura Gaiger explores humanity’s relationship with the sea, as a force of nature, political landscape, and common resource. Through a total installation of monumental paintings on canvas and canvas, small, brightly colored frescoes, and carved floor works, she examines how imperial, economic, and national interests intervene in ecological and social contexts. There are also stories of how individuals and small local communities resist forms of control. In this rich visual, sensory, and political exhibition, the referentially rich works also contain an examination of the human urge to control nature and our vulnerability to the forces we try to tame.
How do you read a landscape? Laura Gaiger insists that she is a landscape painter. This is related to her understanding of the landscape as a space where people's experiences, stories and actions unfold. In this sense, the landscape is not just nature, but a social place, with a socio-political history. Landscape painting has historically portrayed nature as an idealized and unchanging image of identity, rather than as a living and changing space. In order to break down the romantic notion of nature as something separate from us, Gaiger allows human stories, conflicts and dreams to be folded into the landscape. In this way, the painting becomes a place where the relationship between people, surroundings and nature can be re-examined.
For the exhibition, Gaiger has produced a large number of works that juxtapose painting and installation in a cascading network of references. The paintings undulate through the space, taking us beneath the surface, unfolding over walls and floating across the floor. The works weave together personal stories, social commentary and literary and art historical references. She works in a figurative idiom with an expressive but subdued color scheme – often blue tones, white and touches of orange or magenta. Through play with perspective, draping and metaphor, she creates dynamic compositions where human stories of place and belonging are intertwined.
The exhibition’s title, As Emperors Own Empires, is taken from historian C.L.R. James’ reading of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, in which he describes how man (Captain Ahab) seeks to own the sea as emperors own their empires. For James, this becomes an allegory of modern power structures and the struggle between individual obsession (capitalist and imperialist control) and collective freedom. Gaiger borrows the title to turn our gaze towards our contemporary relationship with the sea: from colonial and industrial power projects to local and human stories of resistance and care. In this way, the title points towards both history and the present, as a question of who actually owns, or belongs to, the sea.
As an introduction to the exhibition project, Gaiger has collaborated with environmental activists from different parts of the world; Argentina, Canada, the Philippines, Shetland and Svalbard. Their descriptions of the landscapes they fight for, and their resistance to companies like Equinor, are a central source of inspiration and give the exhibition a multivocal, global perspective.
In the work ‘Pappa Betaler Ikke For Konsekvensene’, a 13-meter-long, weather-beaten sail forms almost a barrier in front of the entrance door. The dark sailcloth has been painted with many white text banners, with slogans from various protest movements' resistance to a growing Norwegian environmental colonialism in different parts of the world. The slogans refer, among other things, to Equinor's planned oil field off Shetland, Rosebank, where the company will receive UK state tax breaks for a project that threatens the ocean's ecosystems and which is estimated to release over 200 million tons of CO₂ if the resources are extracted. Equinor is also planning seismic surveys in the Argentine sea, where powerful sound waves are used to find new oil and gas fields. This is a method that threatens a unique marine ecosystem and has met with strong opposition from coastal communities, environmental lawyers and climate activists. Through the physical and symbolic weight of the work, Gaiger casts a critical eye on Norwegian industrial extraction in international waters, confronting us with the discomfort of slogans such as “No way, Norway”.
In a sculptural wall-hung panorama consisting of five paintings, the home landscapes of the environmental activists involved are portrayed. The panorama brings together five environmental struggles that illuminate how Norwegian companies, especially Equinor, are involved in oil and mining projects that threaten the climate, ecosystems and local communities – from Shetland and Canada to Argentina and the Philippines. At the same time, the situation in Svalbard shows how Norway’s geopolitical ambitions also affect people and the environment closer to home, where state control and national interests come at the expense of community, nature and diversity.
References to Equinor are repeated in the unifying shapes on the floor, which are derived from oil survey maps and seabed topography. The CNC-cut shapes are painted with boat laquer and varnished so that it is possible to walk on them. The two large paintings ‘Self Portrait as Rebecca’ and ‘Boiled in Hell-Fire’ explore the contradiction between freedom and perdition at sea, between the fearless sailor and the one who is thrown overboard. The two works mirror each other as ideal and alter ego, where the sea is both a space for self-realization and a reminder of the untamed forces of nature.
In the two large paintings ‘The Blue Commons’, a community of figures emerges. People who have defied oppressive structures and found their freedom at sea. The figures are highlighted both through the perspective of the composition and their high position on the wall. Their gestures and movements create a dynamic, vivid expression in clear tones of white, sky blue and bright orange.
The figures can be identified as the Chinese pirate Zheng Yi Sao, a woman who in the 19th century demanded power in a male-dominated world and led over 400 ships and 60,000 pirates. The British author Daphne du Maurier is portrayed in red overalls and is celebrated here for her free but threateningly independent literary character Rebecca. We also find Madleen Kulab, who is Gaza's first female fisherman, and who fights for the right to feed herself and her family from the sea and to preserve the sustainable traditions of her local community. There is also a sailor from the Royal Indian Navy mutiny in 1946, who represents collective courage and struggle against colonial oppression. The title refers to economist Guy Standing's idea of the ocean as a blue commons – a common good threatened by privatization and industrial extraction – and to political scientist Elinor Ostrom's research on how communities can manage natural resources themselves without hierarchical control. Through these images, Gaiger unites storytelling, theory and mythology into a visual manifesto of human resilience, freedom and care for the sea as a shared space.
Placed opposite the large sailcloth, the paintings form a space for shared resistance and solidarity, where the sea appears as a liberating landscape for human agency and survival. The exhibition thus conveys a multi-voiced story of resistance, responsibility and belonging, where the sea becomes an image of both exploitation and freedom, control and care in the face of crisis.

Original text in Norwegian:I As Emperors Own Empires utforsker den britiskfødte landskapsmaleren Laura Gaiger menneskets forhold til havet, som naturkraft, politisk landskap og felles ressurs. Gjennom en totalinstallasjon av monumentale malerier på seilduk og lerret, små fargesterke fresker og utskjerte gulvverk undersøker hun hvordan imperialistiske, økonomiske og nasjonale interesser griper inn i økologiske og sosiale sammenhenger. Her er også historier om hvordan enkeltmennesker og små lokalsamfunn motsetter seg former for kontroll. I denne rike visuelle, sanselige og politiske utstillingen rommer de referanserike arbeidene også en undersøkelse av menneskets trang til å kontrollere naturen og vår sårbarhet overfor de kreftene vi forsøker å temme.
Hvordan leser man et landskap? Laura Gaiger insisterer på at hun er landskapsmaler. Det henger sammen med at hun forstår landskapet som et rom der menneskers erfaringer, historier og handlinger utspiller seg. Landskapet er slik sett ikke bare natur, men et sosialt sted med en sosiopolitisk historie. Landskapsmaleriet har historisk fremstilt naturen som et idealisert og uforanderlig bilde på identitet, snarere enn som et levende og skiftende rom. For å bryte ned den romantiske forestillingen om naturen som noe adskilt fra oss, lar Gaiger menneskelige historier, konflikter og drømmer foldes inn i landskapet. Slik blir maleriet et sted der forholdet mellom mennesker, omgivelser og natur kan undersøkes på nytt.
Til utstillingen har Gaiger produsert et stort antall arbeider som sammenstiller maleri og installasjon i et kaskadeaktig nett av referanser. Verkene vever sammen personlige historier, samfunnskommentarer og litterære samt kunsthistoriske referanser. Utstillingens tittel, As Emperors Own Empires, er hentet fra historikeren C.L.R. James’ lesning av Herman Melvilles Moby-Dick, der han beskriver hvordan mennesket (kaptein Ahab) søker å eie havet slik keisere eier sine imperier. For James blir dette en allegori over moderne maktstrukturer og på kampen mellom individuell besettelse (kapitalistisk og imperialistisk kontroll) og kollektiv frihet. I verket Pappa betaler ikke for konsekvensene danner en 13 meter lang, værbitt seilduk nærmest en barriere foran inngangsdøren. Den mørke duken har påmalt flere hvite tekstbanner med slagord fra ulike protestbevegelsers motstand mot en voksende norsk miljøkolonialisme i ulike deler av verden. Slagordene refererer blant annet til Equinors planlagte oljefelt utenfor Shetland, Rosebank, hvor selskapet vil motta statlige skattelettelser for et prosjekt som truer havets økosystemer og som estimert vil slippe ut over 200 millioner tonn CO₂ dersom ressursene utvinnes. Equinor planlegger også seismiske undersøkelser i det argentinske havet, der kraftige lydbølger brukes for å finne nye olje- og gassfelt. Dette er en metode som truer et unikt marint økosystem og som har møtt sterk motstand fra kystsamfunn, miljøjurister og klimaaktivister. Gjennom verkets fysiske og symbolske tyngde retter Gaiger et kritisk blikk mot norsk industriell utvinning i internasjonale havområder, og konfronterer oss med ubehaget i slagord som No way, Norway.
I et skulpturelt vegghengt panorama bestående av fem malerier, portretteres hjemstedene og landskapene til de involverte miljøaktivistene. Panoramaet samler fem miljøkamper som belyser hvordan norske selskaper, særlig Equinor, er involvert i olje- og gruveprosjekter som truer klima, økosystemer og lokalsamfunn – fra Shetland og Canada til Argentina og Filippinene. Samtidig viser situasjonen på Svalbard hvordan Norges geopolitiske ambisjoner også påvirker mennesker og miljø nærmere hjemme, der statlig kontroll og nasjonale interesser går på bekostning av fellesskap, natur og mangfold.
Referanser til Equinor gjentas i de samlende formene på gulvet, som er avledet fra oljekart og havbunnstopografi. De CNC-kuttede formene er malt med båtmaling og lakkert slik at det er mulig å gå på dem. De to store maleriene Self Portrait as Rebecca og Boiled in Hell-Fire utforskes motsetningen mellom frihet og undergang til sjøs, mellom den fryktløse seileren og den som kastes over bord. De to verkene speiler hverandre som ideal og alter ego, der havet både er et rom for selvrealisering og en påminnelse om naturens utemmede krefter.
I de to store maleriene The Blue Commons trer et fellesskap av skikkelser frem. Mennesker som har trosset undertrykkende strukturer og funnet sin frihet på havet. Figurene løftes frem både gjennom perspektivet i komposisjonen og den høye plasseringen på veggen. Deres gester og bevegelser skaper et dynamisk, levende uttrykk i klare fargetoner av hvitt, himmelblått og skarpt oransje.
Skikkelsene kan identifiseres som den kinesiske piraten Zheng Yi Sao, en kvinne som som på 1800-tallet krevde makt i en mannsdominert verden og ledet over 400 skip og 60 000 pirater. Den britiske forfatteren Daphne du Maurier er portrettert i rød overall og hylles her for sin frie, men truende uavhengige litterære skikkelse Rebecca.
