Marjolaine Ryley
from the series Villa Mona
1996-2006

In her project ‘Villa Mona’, Ryley documented her mother’s house on the Belgian coast, and the objects and accumulations it contains. The project is an exercise in the particular, in memory and family ties. Like Bachelard’s notion of evoking memory in a reader through the recollections of the author, Ryley conjures the sense of intimacy in place which is individuated and in-common at the same time.
