My recent work has been influenced by a scholarship to Florence, where I researched the enduring contradiction of painting as both ornamentation and fine art, through an exploration of religious and fresco paintings. In my work I combine the languages of formalism, symbolism, figuration and decoration, and play at the boundary between representation and abstraction. I am deeply invested in the craft of painting and the chemistry(/alchemy) of its materials.
I have also been influenced by writers on the psychology of space, principally Gaston Bachelard, by the phenomenon of the romantic pastoral, and by the Jungian tradition of the collective unconscious. From this foundation I explore the notion of home, and in my current work I particularly seek to evoke a sense of the ‘saudade’ or ‘hiraeth’ - bittersweet nostalgia for part-real, part-imagined histories and places. My imagery references make-believe, childhood worlds, and loss.
My recent hexaptych paintings combine split-perspective compositions borrowed from early Renaissance polyptychs with filmic domestic imagery, to call forth narrative using autobiographical sources.
